NEW DELHI: After the initial hiccups, the ambitious multi-level parking project of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi might finally see the light of day. At a recent meeting, the civic body assured the Environment and Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) that is monitoring the multi-crore project that work at Ramlila Ground, Parade Ground and Kamla Nagar would begin in January next, while the projects at South Extension (two parking lots), Greater Kailash and Kamla Nagar will commence a couple of months after that. Giving a brief time-table of how the work of developing seven fully automated parking lots would be taken up, MCD officials told EPCA that the work order for the first three lots would be awarded by January-end next year, while for the remaining parking sites it will be done by the end of the current financial year. These parking sites are likely to become operational by end of 2008 or early 2009. In May last year, the MCD Standing Committee had rejected the proposal for the project after Councillors raised strong objection to the appointment of a consultant and granting three projects to a single contractor, besides alleging flouting of rules and procedures. They had even demanded a probe leading to the procedure beginning afresh. The MCD has told EPCA that so far seven companies have been short-listed for the project and financial bids would be invited soon. MCDinformed that parties undertaking the project would be given commercial spaces also.
