Delhi Minister directed to vacate official residence

The place has been allotted for location of a family court

Mangat Ram Singhal

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday directed Delhi Industry Minister Mangat Ram Singhal to vacate his official residence here by this coming Friday as the place had been allotted for location of a family court.

A Bench of Justice A. K. Mathur and Justice Markandey Katju issuing the order made it clear that if the Minister failed to vacate the house by Friday, the Registrar-General of the Supreme Court would take action and could also take the help of the police in taking possession of the house situated on Plots 23-24 at Rouse Avenue on DDU Marg. The Bench passed the orders on an application filed by Chetna, Legal Advisory, Women and Children Welfare Society, a non-governmental organisation.

It alleged that since the area in question under the occupation of the State Minister had not been handed over to the authorities concerned, the family court could not be located.

It said that 15 family courts had to be set up in Delhi and in November 2002 the Supreme Court had directed that five plots including the one at Rouse Avenue be handed over to the authorities. The Delhi Government had informed the Union Ministry of Urban Affairs that the occupant of No. 217, Rouse Avenue (on plot numbers 23 and 24) had to vacate the premises so that it could be demolished for construction of a new building for establishing the Family Court.
