NEW DELHI: After getting X-ray scanners installed at all the nine entry points earlier this year, the authorities at the high-security Tihar Central Jail are now in the process of getting closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at all sensitive points to tighten security and also monitor activities going on in various jails. Nearly 100 CCTVs will be installed at a cost of Rs. 80 lakhs and each jail is likely to have at least 10 CCTV cameras at various sensitive points, said a jail official. These points will include the entry gates and also the places where the inmates meet the visitors. CCTV cameras have been installed in four jails, while the process of installing them is on in the remaining five jails. These cameras will not only help in tightening security but also be of immense help to monitor the alleged handing over of narcotics items and weapons to prisoners by visitors, said the official. On an average, Tihar entertains about 5,000 visitors daily and accommodates more than 13,000 inmates. Activities of the inmates and the visitors apart, the cameras will also help in keeping an eye on jail officials. Upgrading of the security apparatus was taken up following the sensational escape of Sher Singh Rana, in 2004.
