CHANDIGARH: As a tribute to the great martyr Shaheed Udham Singh on the 67th anniversary of his martyrdom, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has announced plans to establish a special chair at Guru Nanak Dev University on the life and works of the freedom fighters and patriots who made the supreme sacrifice during the Indian freedom struggle. Addressing a gathering in the grain market of Sunam town in Sangrur district, Capt. Singh recalled the history of the Indian freedom movement as a saga replete with sacrifices made by unsung heroes. He said observance of such occasions was of paramount importance as it kindled the spirit of patriotism and nationalism among the younger generations. The Chief Minister also announced plans to set up a suitable memorial somewhere in Chandigarh to perpetuate the memory of thousands of known and unknown freedom fighters who attained martyrdom during the country's freedom struggle. He said the State Government had already given a grant of Rs. 1 crore each to the native village of Sardar Sham Singh Attariwala, Baba Hira Singh Bhattal, Sardar Sewa Singh Thikriwala, Sardar Harchand Singh Jaijee, Akali Phoola Singh and Punjab Kesari Lala Lajpat Rai to develop them as modern villages and showcasing their heroic deeds of rare valour and bravery for the future generations. Earlier, the Chief Minister honoured Sikander Singh for his 18-year-long dedicated research on the life, philosophy and works of Shaheed Udham Singh.
