CHENNAI: The Kanchi Kamakoti Childs Trust Hospital is launching laparoscopy (key-hole) surgery services. Minimally invasive laparoscopy procedures will enable surgeons to undertake complex tasks on infants, especially the newborn. For children, laparoscopic techniques are used to operate on the appendix, gall bladder and spleen, besides more intricate procedures such as repair of kidney obstructions. Since the procedures involve incisions of 3-4 mm diameter, complex operations can be undertaken on children of any age. Pioneering paediatric laparoscopic surgeon Klaas N. Bax of the Rotterdam Children's Hospital, Netherlands, will inaugurate the service on August 2. The hospital is also celebrating the World Breastfeeding Week from Tuesday. The theme is "Infant Milk Substitutes (IMS) Act-Making it known to the people." The weeklong programme includes bonny baby contest, poster exhibition and cultural competitions. Outreach programmes to target the public and college students will also be held. A rally will be taken out, under the auspices of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, along the Marina on August 6.
Outpatient service
The hospital is also starting a free outpatient service from Tuesday for the underprivileged patients. Modelled on the monthly health camps conducted by the institution at Chetpet, Manali and Mint, the clinic will offer free consultation between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on all days, except Sunday.
