Two killed in encounter

NEW DELHI: Two men accused of involvement in over half a dozen cases of murder and dacoity in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh were killed in an encounter with the Special Staff of the North Delhi police on Monday evening. They have been identified as Zulfikar (26) and Nazakat (22), both natives of Meerut in U.P.

The police said that following a specific tip-off they intercepted a white Maruti car in which the duo were travelling on Ramghat Road at Timarpur around 5 p.m. However, when challenged, the duo allegedly opened fire at the police who retaliated, fatally injuring both the accused. The two were taken to Sushrut Trauma Centre where they were declared brought dead.

From the car in which they were travelling, the police claim to have recovered two country-made pistols and some live ammunition. The U.P. police have been informed of the incident.

Elderly woman assaulted, robbed

NEW DELHI: An elderly woman and her brother were assaulted and robbed of valuables worth lakhs of rupees by three assailants at Sarita Vihar in South Delhi on Monday.

The incident took place in the evening when Lalita and her brother were in the house, while her son Gaurav, who is a lawyer by profession, had gone out on work. It is learnt that the three culprits somehow gained entry into the house and robbed her of her jewellery. It is alleged that they cut one of her ears and stabbed her brother when they offered resistance.

A case of robbery has been registered at Sarita Vihar police station. The culprits are still at large.

Bus overturns, four injured

NEW DELHI: At least four passengers sustained injuries when a bus overturned near INA Market in South Delhi on Monday. They were admitted to All-India Institute of Medical Sciences. The incident occurred around 8-30 p.m. when the bus plying on route No. 588 overturned. The injured were taken to hospital where they are stated to be out of danger. Meanwhile, a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered.

Man held for temple theft

NEW DELHI: A man who allegedly stole Rs. 940 from a donation box at Sai Baba Temple in South Delhi on Sunday has been arrested by the South Delhi police. The identity of the suspect was established with the help of the closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at the temple.

According to the police, the recordings showed that the accused, Sanjay, had stolen the money. Sanjay allegedly told the police that he had been stealing money from the donation boxes of various temples and gurdwaras.

The police said the Sai Baba temple management had installed 28 CCTV cameras to upgrade security at the complex in the wake of the terrorist threat.
