NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Monday gave eight more weeks to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to wrap up investigations into alleged nexus between Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) engineers and officials and their political bosses for allowing unauthorised constructions to come up across the Capital. A Division Bench of the High Court comprising Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Rekha Sharma gave two months more to complete the probe when counsel for the agency submitted that more time was needed to conclude the inquiry in view of the enormity of the task as well as shortage of staff. Counsel for the agency also informed the Court that despite the Court order, the Delhi Government had not made available to it staff and equipment it had asked for. The Bench directed the Delhi Government to meet the requirements of the investigating agency within ten days. Earlier, the investigating agency filed a status report about the progress of investigation into the allegations as directed by the Court in April this year. The agency said that it had so far registered 16 preliminary enquiries (PEs) and five regular cases against Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) engineers and had booked 463 illegal properties across the city. Observing that "the State has abdicated its duty", the High Court had in April this year ordered a CBI probe into the matter.
