This Day That Age
The Egyptian President, Col. Nasser, declared in Cairo on July 31 that he was determined to honour all international obligations on the Suez Canal. "Both the Suez Canal Convention of 1888 and the assurance concerning it in the Anglo-Egyptian Agreement of 1954 will be fully maintained," he said in a statement. "Freedom of navigation in the Suez Canal is neither affected nor involved in any manner or to any degree by its nationalisation," the statement went on, adding that Egypt would not admit the presence of foreign warships in Suez Canal ports except on goodwill visits.
