This Day That Age
J.C. Laker, the Surrey off-spinner, bowled himself into cricket history when he set up a world record by taking 19 wickets in the fourth Test in which England beat Australia by an innings and 170 runs on July 31. Australia were all out for 205 in their second innings. England's victory, gained with an hour to spare at Old Trafford in Manchester, gave them a 2-1 lead with one match drawn in the five-game series and assured them of retaining "The Ashes." The scores: England 1st innings - 459. Australia - 1st innings 84 (Laker 9 for 37) and 2nd innings 205 (Laker 10 for 53).
