Kolkata: Artisans who craft the clay idols for Durga Puja may soon have a new establishment to cater to their needs, if a Government scheme to foster traditional art sees the light of day. "The new building will have five floors, as currently the artists are working in small spaces," said Ranjit Issar, Union Secretary, Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation. The proposal has already been sent for appraisal to the Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO). The project is expected to cost about Rs. 21 crore, with the cost being equally shared by the State and Central Governments. Mr. Issar also said that a new policy for urban vendors was being considered to ensure that their right to livelihood was not affected by frequent evictions by the police. However, the subject was still under discussion and so it was not possible to set a timeframe for the proposal, he said.
