Somdev gets wild card
NEW DELHI: Somdev Dev Varman has been given a wild card entry for the $600,000 Legg Mason classic ATP Tour tennis tournament at Washington. He will take on Edgardo Massa of Argentina.
Three other Indians attempted the qualifying event, but could not make much headway. Sunil Kumar defeated Andy Ram of Israel 6-4, 7-5 before losing to Wesley Whitehouse of South Africa 5-7, 4-6.
The sixth-seeded Karan Rastogi lost 5-7, 1-6 to Jan Michael Gambill of the U.S., who eventually made the main draw as a lucky-loser in place of an injured Andy Roddick.
Prakash Amritraj gave a walkover to Devin Britton of the U.S.
Rohan Bopanna could not make it in time for the qualifying event owing to his preoccupation with the quarterfinals of the Challenger in Canada. — Special Correspondent
