NEW DELHI: P. Hari Krishna maintained his position at the top after drawing with Hungary's Ferenc Berkes in the fourth round of the Marx Gyorgy memorial chess tournament in Paks, Hungary, on Monday. The 24-move draw in Queen's Gambit Declined raised Hari's tally to three points and Berkes's aggregate to 1.5 points. Hungary's Zoltan Almasi and Ukraine's Zahar Efimenko won their games in Sicilian Defence to share the second spot with 2.5 points. Almasi defeated China's Wang Yue (2) in 48 moves while Efimenko won with black pieces against tailender Hungary's Peter Acs (0.5) in 44 moves.
Setback for Sethuraman
Woman Grandmaster Tania Sachdev (3.5 points) drew with lower-rated Frenchman Vincent Martinez in the seventh round of the Biel Masters chess tournament in Biel, Switzerland, on Monday. Talented youngster S.P. Sethuraman (3.5) went down to Switzerland's Alex Vuilleumier while Woman International Master Kruttika Nadig (3.5) defeated Israel's Ben Porat. Six players shared the lead at 5.5 points.
Barua, Chowdhury lose
Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua (four points) suffered his first loss in the Dutch Open chess tournament after facing eighth seed Alon Greenfeld of Israel in the sixth round at Dieren on Monday. While the veteran Indian lost in 37 moves, Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury (3.5) surrendered in 36 moves to another GM from Israel, fifth seed Sergey Erenburg Roktim Bandyopadhyay (4) drew with Germany's Martin Senff while Saptarshi Roy (4) beat local Ewoud de Groote.
