Trees at the receiving end

Luck seems to have turned away from the trees lining the city. Whatever sparse green cover is remaining in the city, it is quickly disappearing thanks to the topsy-turvy development policies of the authorities and the wilful ways of the public.

Every monsoon season sees a drastic reduction in the tree coverage of the city streets, with huge trees, weakened by the unscientific digging around and chopping off of branches, toppling down with the feeblest of wind and rain.

The latest victims were the trees that provided shade to the passers-by near the Ernakulam South Railway Station.

The branches of the trees were ruthlessly chopped off by the Railway authorities, though it was not yet clear which development project necessitated the shearing of the green cover.
