What about Hizbollah?

The editorial says that while Hizbollah is opposed to the existence of Israel, it has indicated that it will end the current spell of combat if Israel releases its imprisoned supporters and withdraws from the Lebanese territory still under occupation.

Why should Tel Aviv believe that Hizbollah will keep its word, especially when it has a record of unleashing violence against Israel?

Vembar K. Ranganathan,
Irvington, New York

Hizbollah has continued to fire rockets into Northern Israel over the past six years killing many civilians. Even in the ongoing crisis, it fired Katyushas into Israeli cities. Obviously, civilians were the targets.

While the Israeli Government evacuates civilians, minimising the casualties, the Lebanese Government has done little except blaming Israel for a war that Hizbollah started.

Suma Victor,
Chennai

Why has the Lebanon Government done nothing about Hizbollah growing in strength over the years? Let us not forget the heavy price we paid as a result of supporting the LTTE.

Chelladurai Williams,
Chennai

Though the deaths of thousands of innocent Lebanese are deeply saddening, Israel alone cannot be blamed for them. Hizbollah should stop using civilians and civilian areas as shields. If it really cares for the people of Lebanon, it should immediately release the two Israeli soldiers. As for human rights, the need to respect them applies to Hizbollah too.

T. Manuel Arun,
Madurai, T.N.

Suicide bombings by Hizbollah have claimed thousands of Israeli lives over the years. Organised resistance movements are legitimate targets of war. So are the areas from where rockets are fired.

T.H. Chowdary,
Secunderabad
