MEETING: President of the Gulbarga Zilla Panchayat Yellappa Karkunde (second from left) presiding over the general body meeting of the zilla panchayat in Gulbarga on Tuesday.
GULBARGA: The general body of Gulbarga Zilla Panchayat on Tuesday got an assurance from the managing director of Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company (GESCOM) Mujeeb Ahmed that efforts will be made to replace faulty transformers in the district and provide power supply for pending drinking water projects and "Ganga Kalayana" schemes at the earliest. Mr. Ahmed was asked to be present at the general body meeting presided by zilla panchayat president Yellappa Karkunde to answer the queries of members. Answering the queries of B.R. Patil, Sharanaprakash Patil, Sunil Valyapur and M.Y. Patil about the delay in replacing faulty transformers in rural areas, Mr. Ahmed said that GESCOM had received 158 transformers from two agencies and they had been distributed to the districts coming under the jurisdiction of the GESCOM, he said. As many as 18 new transformers were expected in a day or two. Orders had been placed for 91 transformers. Work had been taken up in the repair centres in Gulbarga and Yadgir, he said.
New transformers
Dr. Sharanaprakash Patil, Sedam MLA, and Opposition leader Subash Rathod took him to task for supplying new transformers to other districts, while the problem was more severe in Gulbarga. Mr. Rathod told the official that 25 piped water schemes and 50 mini water supply schemes were yet to be provided electricity connections, depriving water to more than 1.5 lakh people in the villages. Mr. Ahmed said measures would be initiated to energise all the drinking water supply and "Ganga Kalyana" schemes. On the demand for supply of three-phase power supply in rural areas during the day, Mr. Ahmed said the GESCOM area has been divided into two batches, which would be provided power in turns every week according to the schedule.
