KANNUR: The Kannur Jilla Paristhithi Samithi will organise a campaign against large-scale clearing of shrubs in midland hills in the district for rubber plantation. Samithi secretary Bhaskaran Vellur said in a press release here on Tuesday that the midland hills, already facing ruin from mining of laterite rocks and soil, were now under the fresh threat of being converted into rubber plantations. He said the samithi would organise a seminar at Aravanchal, near Payyannur, in September on the latest threat to the midland laterite hills and their shrubs, which were habitats of various species of fauna. The seminar would also highlight how the uncontrolled conversion of the hills for expanding rubber cultivation would push rubber growers into a debt trap, he said. The release said the samithi had conducted a three-day `Learn from Nature' camp on the Anandasramam campsite at Kanhangad.
