KANNUR: The Kannur University on Tuesday announced the Dr. P.K. Rajan Memorial Excellence Award for teachers. B. Ananada Bhanu, Professor, Anthropology Department, Kannur University'; G. Anil Kumar, Reader, Zoology Department, Sree Narayana College, Kannur, and C.P.V. Vijayakumaran, Reader, Hindi Department, Payyannur College, were selected by the expert committee constituted by the university that included former Chief Secretary and Calicut University Vice-Chancellor T.N. Jayachandran, Sree Chithira Thirunal Institute for Medical Sciences Director K. Mohandas and former Kerala University Vice-Chancellor B. Ekbal. The university instituted the award in memory of Dr. Rajan, the second Vice-Chancellor of the university who had died in an accident on January 14 last, to three outstanding faculty members, one from the university teaching department and two from affiliated colleges as part of the decennial celebration of the institution. Announcing the awards at a press conference here, Vice-Chancellor P. Chandramohan said that the award comprising cash prize of Rs.10,000 each and citations would be presented at a function here in August end. Mr. Jayachandran, who was also present at the press conference, said that the committee got four nominations from university teaching departments and 13 from the affiliated colleges. Considering the fact that there were 20 university departments and nearly 350 departments in affiliated colleges, the number of nominations for the award was far below what could be expected. The committee considered academic, research, and teaching activities of the teachers nominated for the award, he said. Pro Vice-Chancellor K. Kunhikrishnan and Registrar M. Abdul Rasheed were also present at the press conference.
