Economy will grow faster, says PCC general secretary "Proposed Infrastructure development will contribute to faster economic growth"

Pondicherry: The Pondicherry Pradesh Congress committee (PCC) has congratulated Chief Minister N. Rangasamy for presenting `a pro poor and development-oriented' budget for the Union Territory. Addressing newsmen at the party office here on Monday the general secretary of the PCC and former Education Minister A. Gandhiraj said that the budget contained broader schemes to promote the economy, to generate employment for the educated youth and to promote industry and tourism through various incentives.

Mr. Gandhiraj said that without imposing any new taxes, the Chief Minister had come out with proposals to waive the loans and interest dues from farmers to cooperative institutions. He had also announced scrapping of sales tax on the vegetable and edible oils conceding the demand of the trading community.

The infrastructure development proposed in the budget would contribute to faster growth of the economy.

The PCC general secretary said that proposal to set up a university in the State, an Engineering college in Karaikal, proposal to extend annual cash incentive of Rs. 250 to every student of Standards VI to XII and also full reimbursement of fees for students joining private professional colleges under government quota were other laudable and important schemes.

Mr. Gandhiraj said that the PCC president P. Shanmugham was now in Delhi to meet the AICC leader Sonia Gandhi and other functionaries of the Congress. The AICC leader had appreciated the performance of the Congress and its allies in the recent civic polls here to restore democracy at the grass root level after a gap of 38 years.
