BANGALORE: Three in-service doctors from the State, who had applied for selection to postgraduate superspeciality course in medical sciences, have challenged the selection of Jayashree Kharge, daughter of senior Congress leader and MLA, M. Mallikarjun Kharge for DM (superspeciality) course in cardiology. Two petitions challenging the selection of Ms. Jayashree to the superspeciality course came up before the High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday and Justice B.S. Patil ordered issue of emergent notices and adjourned further hearing in the cases. In his petition, A. Aravind said he was working as a general surgeon in the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) and that he was challenging the July 25, 2006, notification on the selection of candidates for superspeciality courses. He alleged that the list of selected candidates was manipulated to favour a few candidates, including Dr. Jayashree Kharge. He said though the rules stipulated that a doctor should have put in 10 years of service to be eligible for selection from the in-service quota, Ds. Jayashree Kharge had not put in the required number of years. Yet, she was selected and allotted a seat in DM cardiology in Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, Bangalore. He urged the court to stay the selection. In another petition, Divya Prakash M., working as a lecturer in neurology, Bangalore Medical College, said that on May 22, 2006, the State had framed rules called the Karnataka Medical Education (Deputation of in-service candidates to post-graduate super speciality courses) Rules, 2006. He said that on May 23 he appeared for a written test for the 2006-07 course and had secured 67 marks. He secured two marks in viva-voce and was placed higher than Dr. Jayashree Kharge in the merit list. He too urged the court to stay the selection. Mr. Patil adjourned hearing on the two petitions and ordered issue of emergent notices. Another petition on the same matter was filed in the High Court on Tuesday.
