Farmer ends life in Belgaum district

Belgaum: A 35-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide at Mastmardi village on Monday because of mounting debts. A case of unnatural death has been registered in the Hirebagewadi police station.

According to official sources and villagers, Kallappa Shivappa Kurangi, father of three sons and a daughter, hanged himself from a tree in his fields on the outskirts of village. Villagers said Kallappa owned two and a half acres and had planted potato with the help of loans from a cooperative bank and moneylenders. But he was unable to recover even half the amount invested during the past three years. — Staff Correspondent

Government approves 24 new nursing colleges

Bangalore: The Cabinet subcommittee on professional courses on Tuesday approved 24 new nursing colleges in the State, which will function from September.

Minister for Medical Education V.S. Acharya, who chaired a meeting of the subcommittee, told presspersons that the new colleges were sanctioned based on the recommendations of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. The intake of each college would be about 40, Dr. Acharya said. Before admitting students, the managements had to obtain formal approval from the Nursing Council of India, he said.

Dr. Acharya said the subcommittee had approved increase in intake of students for postgraduate and diploma courses in pharmacy, physiotherapy, radiology and surgery. — Special Correspondent

Indian announces spot fares

BANGALORE: National carrier Indian on Tuesday announced spot fares on domestic flights in economy class up to September 30, offering a large discount during the lean season.

The spot fares will be available as X class fares or unchecked fares on select flights out of Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata and Hyderabad a few hours prior to the departure of the flight, according to a company release here.

Tickets bought against spot fares will be valid only for the flight for which it is issued. No refund will be permitted against cancellation of the ticket, the release said.

Four sentenced to life imprisonment

DAVANGERE: Four persons who murdered a shepherd in Hariapura village in Harihar were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by a fast-track court here.

The accused, Anil, Nagaraj, Mahendra and Mehboob, of Hariapura village killed Ramappa, a shepherd of the same village, and dumped his body near Amaravathi on November 10, 2005. They sold Ramappa's seven sheep for Rs. 8,700 in Hamsabhavi. — Staff Correspondent

Funds for private bus stand in Shimoga

BANGALORE: The State Government has decided to sanction Rs. 19.25 crore for the construction of a private bus stand in Shimoga. Addressing presspersons after a meeting here on Tuesday, Minister for Water Resources K.S. Eshwarappa said the private bus stand and that of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation would be constructed adjacent to each other. The fire station near the present KSRTC bus stand would be shifted, he said.

A 670-acre plot had been notified for the construction of an airport in Shimoga. The authorities had already acquired about 900 acres, Mr. Eshwarappa said. — Special Correspondent

Woman killed in accident

HASSAN: Akkayyamma (60), a resident of Chikkamallenahalli in Hassan taluk was killed on Tuesday after a petroleum tanker, which was coming from Mysore, knocked her down. She died at the district hospital. The Gorur Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Tailors stage protest

HASSAN: The district unit of the State Tailors Association took out a protest march here on Tuesday, seeking provident fund and other facilities. The association members took out a procession from Hemavathi Statue to the office of the Deputy Commissioner and formed a human chain at N.R. Circle. They staged a dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner, and handed over a memorandum to him. — Staff Correspondent

Free eye check-up

MYSORE: A free eye check-up camp will be organised by the Adi Karnataka Hitharakshana Horata Samithi on Wednesday. The camp will be held from 9.30 a.m. at Shambhulingeshwara Community Hall on Ramaiah Road, Ashokpuram and former Union Minister V. Sreenivas Prasad will inaugurate it. P. Nagaraj, president, Mysore Co-operative Bank, will preside and MLA M.K. Somashekar will be present. — Special Correspondent

Succumbs to injuries

MYSORE: Sayiid Anwar (70) who was grievously injured in an accident on Sunday, succumbed to injuries at the K.R. Hospital here on Tuesday. The N.R. Traffic police have registered a case and are investigating.

MYSORE: The 43rd Foundation Day of the Regional Institute of Education was celebrated here on Tuesday. V.K. Nataraj, former director, Madras Institute of Development Studies, delivered the Sardar Pannikar Memorial Lecture on "shifting paradigms in Indian higher education". He noted the decline in popularity of pure science courses and proliferation of management institutions, applied courses and said short-term market concerns received priority while the long-term concerns of education had taken a backseat. C.S. Nagaraju, principal of RIE, and senior faculty members and students were present.

MYSORE: A two-day workshop to review the new syllabus of B.Sc. Computer Science was held in the city recently. It was organised by the Mahajana First Grade College and the Board of Studies of Computer Science, University of Mysore. B.G. Sangameshwar, Principal, SJ College of Engineering, inaugurated the workshop which was attended by 25 teachers from various colleges. It took stock of the latest developments in the subject and stressed the need to update it periodically.

Protest in Bhadravati

BHADRAVATI: Members of the "inauguration struggle committee" here on Monday resorted to a token strike demanding inaugurating of an Ambedkar Bhavan at Lower Hutha Extension. A few day sago, the activists of the committee staged a dharma in front of the taluk office premises in this regard. The Dalit Sangharsh Samiti has decided to organise a protest march on Monday.

DHARWAD: Karnatak University, Dharwad, announced on Monday the results of M.A. (final and non-semester) Hindi and M.Sc. Computer Science fourth semester examinations held in May or June 2006, according to a press release. — Staff Correspondent

Female bear dead

SHIMOGA: A 26-year-old female bear lodged in the Tiger-Lion Safari at Tyavarekoppa died recently of a respiratory problem, according to the Deputy Conservator of Forest (Wildlife Division) and Executive Director of the safari G.A.N. Karkikar.

Bill deferred

PANAJI: The Legislative Assembly on Monday decided to defer a Bill seeking to provide establishment of the institution of Lokayukta to inquire into the grievances and allegations against public functionaries.

The decision was taken on the last day of the monsoon session of the Assembly when members pointed out some anomalies in the Bill and urged the Government to remove them and introduce it in the next session. The Bill has been cleared by a House Committee. — Special Correspondent
