Governor presents Rajyapuraskar to Scouts and Guides

CHENNAI: Governor S.S. Barnala on Monday said India could be in the forefront in all respects if the people rose above parochial considerations and devoted themselves to work.

The strength and greatness of a country depended on the character of its people, their sense of discipline and their ability to work as a team.

"Qualities count"

Presenting the Rajyapuraskar, the highest State-level award for Scouts and Guides, at a function held at the Raj Bhavan, he said the scouts and guides movement taught the youngsters to put service before self and to do at least one good deed a day.

"It is not that you confine yourself to only one good deed but the lesson of true courtesy and good manners that it conveyed is important." The qualities counted much in public life. The spirit of unity and discipline of service and sacrifice, which the scouts movement sought to inculcate in youth, was the need of the hour for the betterment of humanity.

Mr. Barnala recalled his days in the scouts movement since 1936 and the jamborees and camps in which he participated.

The Governor gave away the Rajyapuraskar to 140 scouts and guides. He released the scouts movement centenary special badge and logo and launched the web site.

Scouts and guides must be in the movement continuously for at least three years to qualify for the award. A total of 4,771 scouts and 4,140 guides qualified for the Rajyapuraskar.

Two scouts and five guides from Tamil Nadu are participating in the centenary jamboree in the United Kingdom.

M. Kutralingam, Secretary, School Education; K. Mariappan, Director of School Education; and S. Paramasivan, State Chief Commissioner, Scouts and Guides, spoke.
