Four-lane bridge in north Goa on the cards

Special Correspondent

PANAJI: Goa Infrastructure Development Corporation Pvt. Ltd. (GIDC), a company floated by Goa's private sector mining industry to take up infrastructure work in mining areas, will build a four-lane bridge in Usgao-Pale area of north Goa investing Rs. 20 crore.

To ease traffic, benefit mines

Sources in the Goa Mineral Ore Exporters' Association told The Hindu on Tuesday that the Goa Government was acquiring land for the bridge.

This move would help the industry by connecting its mining areas with loading points and ease the traffic on the single-lane bridge in the area.

"It would help mines operating in South Goa to transport their ore speedily for processing and loading," said a spokesman of the association.

As it would do away with a lot of restrictions on use of the current single-lane bridge in the area and speed up the transportation of ore, the proposed bridge would bring economies of scale for Goan and non-Goan users (ore transporters) of the bridge.

Major users, from within the State and from other States, were contributing towards the cost of construction.

Around 11 million tonnes of ore iron comes to Goa from Bellary and Hospet in Karnataka.

Work from October 2

The work would start on October 2 this year and would be completed in one year, the sources added.
