Shantanu shocks Chandril, enters last eight

Special Correspondent

KAVALI: Rank outsider Shantanu Rajput shocked third seed Chandril Sood 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in the boys' pre-quarterfinal of the Visvodaya Institute of Technology and Science (VITS)-AITA under-16 super series tennis championships here on Tuesday.

Other seeds dislodged included Shiva Sangwan (seventh) by S.V. Abhishek 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 and sixth ranked D.G. Harshini Reddy by Deepna Vazirani 7-5, 6-1.

Making the last eight were Lakshit Sood, Suraj Desai, A. Daniel Raj, Man Singh Athare, Ankesh Bhargava, Shantanu, Abhishek and Kaza Vinayak Sarma.

Tanvi R. Shah, Neha Purohit, T. Nilaya, Arushi Sharma, Mohana Sai Madhuri, Gopika Kapoor, Deepna and V. Archana completed the quarterfinal line-up among the girls.

Down by a set, Man Singh Athare clawed his way back to subdue Bibaswan Deb 1-6, 6-4, 6-0. Deb, with a strong serve and accurate diagonal returns, called the shots until midway through the second set.
