VISAKHAPATNAM: The Indian team should gain at least fifth place in the 13th Asian women's junior (under-19) volleyball championship, to be held in Thailand in October, hoped its chief coach, Mohamed Kalandar. "The team has good and powerful attackers, and we are concentrating on the defence and reception areas," said Mr. Kalandar after a two-month long coaching camp for the probables was inaugurated at the Port Indoor Stadium here on Tuesday evening. India finished seventh in the last championship in Sri Lanka, 2004, and is now clubbed with holder China and Vietnam in pool B for this year's championship. Mr. Kalandar, made chief coach for the first time, was confident of the team making it to the eight-team round-robin from the preliminary league for which one win is required. Though China was a strong team India could beat Vietnam he said. Mr. Kalandar is being assisted by assistant coaches E. Venkateswara Rao (AP) and Ms. B. Ravindra (Himachal Pradesh). The following players were selected for the camp during the trials held here on July 28 and 29 in the presence of National coach M. Shyam Sundar Rao: Bijina (Kerala), Sneha Singh (Delhi), Arsia Sheikh (AP), S.K. Naima (AP), C.H. Greeshma (Kerala) (all blockers), Minimol Abraham (Kerala), K. Reshma (Kerala), Piyali Roy (West Bengal) (attackers), Y. Smitha (AP), M. Kalaivani (TN) (both universal players), E. Mounika Reddy (AP), Kasturi Dubey (WB) (setters) and Doli Parui (WB) (libero). U. Kavitha (AP), Aruna Tomar (Himachal Pradesh) (attackers), K.V. Pavithra (Karnataka) (universal), A.K. Akshitha (Karnataka) (setter) and Priyashmitha Bapari (WB) (libero), who were attending the senior women's National camp now being held at Gandhinagar would join the camp here after participating in the SAF Games to be held in Sri Lanka in August.
