CHENNAI: Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami on Tuesday reviewed the progress of the photo electoral rolls revision in the State with Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta and other officials of the State Elections Department. At the meeting, Mr. Gupta indicated the methodology, procedure and status of the preparation of photo electoral rolls in the State. According to Mr. Gopalaswami, the elector's photo identity cards' (EPIC) coverage in the State was 75 per cent. In addition, about 8 per cent of electors were likely to possess the EPICs but their numbers were not reflected in the electoral rolls. For the remaining 17 per cent images would have to be taken and distributed. Mr. Gopalaswami also indicated that the photo rolls would be published as draft rolls for the next revision of electoral rolls, with January 1, 2007 as the qualifying date, and the State machinery had to work on that basis. He also reviewed the status of the cases referred by the Election Commission of India during and after the recent general elections in the State.
