CHENNAI: Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudi assured the Assembly on Tuesday that the government was taking steps to stop the construction of a dam across the Palar in Andhra Pradesh. Mr. Ponmudi, who has been given charge of the PWD Ministry since Durai Murugan was indisposed, said the government was trying to expedite the proceedings in the Supreme Court. Replying to a calling attention motion moved by C. Gnanasekaran (Congress) and K. Pandurangan (AIADMK), he said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was willing to come to Hyderabad to discuss the issue with his Andhra Pradesh counterpart. (Mr. Ponmudi and Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin will travel to Hyderabad on August 5 to discuss the issue and the release of Krishna water.) Moving the resolution, Mr. Gnanasekaran said Andhra Pradesh had constructed dams and barrages in 32 places though the length of the river in the state was only 33 km. This was in violation of a 1892 agreement, which prevented the construction a dam across the river, he contended. Mr. Gnanasekaran suggested the setting up of a Palar Water Tribunal on the lines of the Cauvery Tribunal to resolve the issue.
