NEW DELHI: Maruti Udyog Ltd. has announced a hike in prices ranging from Rs. 500 to Rs. 5,000 for some car models including the Alto and the 800. The company attributed the rise in prices to the cascading effect of last month's rise in fuel prices which had hit both input and freight costs. A statement issued by MUL describes the increase in prices as "marginal,'' varying from 0.17 to 1.47 per cent. It says, "the price increase is mainly due to a rise in input and freight costs which increased following the rise in oil prices.'' It added that while it had absorbed a portion of the increased costs, it has decided to pass on a part of this to customers. Following the price hike, the company's best selling model, the Alto, and the Maruti 800 will cost Rs. 500 more in all variants. The highest increase is on the newly-launched `WagonR LPG' model which will now cost Rs. 5,000 more. Prices of the Esteem model have been raised by Rs. 1,000 across all variants. The Omni LPG version will cost Rs. 3,000 more, while the other Omni Cargo and Omni eight-seater prices have been raised by Rs. 500 each. The Baleno Lxi version will be costlier by Rs. 1,000. MUL has said there will be no change in the prices of other models like the Swift, Zen, Baleno (Vxi) and WagonR (petrol).
