Steps to ensure safety of reservoir area residents

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: The Narmada Valley Development Authority has issued instructions to its field officers and District Collectors to remain vigilant and ensure protection of those who are still living in the Sardar Sarovar dam's reservoir area.

Narmada Valley Development Authority Vice-Chairman Uday Verma has asked the NVDA field officers to remain in constant touch with the district administration on matters relating to rehabilitation of the Project-affected families.

Mr. Verma informed that people in three Madhya Pradesh districts -- Jhabua, Barwani and Dhar -- were being affected at a dam height of 119 meters. He said that R&R works up to the dam height of 121.92 meters had been completed but some families could still be residing in the reservoir area. He said that keeping in view the increasing water level, district-wise contingency plans have been made and an amount of Rs. 1.96 crore earmarked for the contingency plan meant for the Sardar Sarovar Project-affected families.

Mr. Verma said contingency plans were also being implemented at the Collectors' level in Khandwa, Dewas and Harda districts for the Indira Sagar Project-affected families.

He said the district administration was making public announcements in the reservoir zone asking them to vacate the area. A flood control cell has also been set up at the NVDA headquarters here.
