`The Government has not been sympathetic to our demands'

DEMANDING ATTENTION: Tailors staging a `rasta roko' demonstration in Shimoga on Tuesday in support of their demands.

SHIMOGA: Members of the district unit of the State Tailors' Association staged a "rasta roko" at Ameer Ahmed Circle here on Tuesday. They took out a procession from the Ramanna Shresthi Park and formed a "human chain" at the Circle, blocking traffic movement for nearly half an hour. Family members of the tailors too joined the protest.

Later, they marched to the Deputy Commissioner's office and submitted a memorandum urging the Government to concede their demands. The demonstration was led by association president T.G. Sridhar Rao.

The living conditions of over ten lakh tailors in the State had become miserable owing to the uncertainty regarding their profession, the memorandum said.

States such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala had set up welfare funds and extended many facilities to tailors such as family pension; maternity allowance; scholarship for children and accident insurance. But the State Government had not reacted to repeated requests to introduce similar welfare measures for tailors in Karnataka, it added.
