  • More than 1,000 families in Bagalkot district have been relocated
  • The low-lying Tarapur village was almost marooned

BIJAPUR: Over 100 villages were affected in Bijapur and Bagalkot districts owing to flooding of the Krishna and the Bhima. Over 1,000 families mostly in Jamkhandi taluk (Bagalkot district) have been moved to elevated places on Tuesday. In Bijapur district, authorities opened two gruel centres, one at Chanegaum in Indi taluk and another at Tarapur in Sindagi taluk, as the Bhima swelled above the danger mark.

    Approach roads

Although none of the residential colonies were flooded, few approach roads have been inundated. The low-lying Tarapur village was almost marooned, and preparations were under way in the evening to shift most of the habitation to safety. It has been estimated that over 5,000 acres of agriculture land has been submerged along the Bhima. According to Deputy Commissioner, Mohammad Mohsin, who toured the affected areas on Tuesday, 40 villages along the Bhima and five villages along the Krishna have been affected. There have no reports on loss of human or animal lives, though the floods have caused heavy damage to crops.

    Increase in flow

Following a substantial increase in inflow, Alamatti dam authorities increased discharge to 3 lakh cusecs by the evening. The water level stood at 517.7 metres as against full reservoir level of 519.6 metres. According to Siddagangappa, Chief Engineer of Alamatti dam zone, the discharge might be increased up to 3.4 lakh cusecs by Wednesday. The CWC had forecasted 3.4 lakh cusecs of inflow into the dam in the next 24 hours ending Wednesday noon. Discharge from the Narayanpur Reservoir, which comes 60 km downstream of Alamatti dam, will also be increased proportionately. A red alert had been sounded along the Krishna, he said. The increased discharge from the Alamtti affected downstream villages such Yalgur, Gangur, Masuti and Tangadagi on the left bank and Koodalasangam, Katgur, Turadagi, Valkadinni, Dannur, Beesaldinni, Kesarpenti, Adihal, Yemmatti and few other villages on the right bank. The Sangamanath temple in Koodalasangama will be flooded if the river flow increases even by a foot, according to reports received here. At least 55 villages have been affected in Bagalkot

district, and over 1,000 families were evacuated from Shurpali, Chinagundi Gadde, Kamadoddi, Janwad and few other affected villages in Jamkhandi taluk along the Krishna. The Bagalkot administration has set up six gruel centres. Though water level is likely to increase in Krishna by Wednesday flow in Ghataprabha is receding. Deputy Commissioner (Bagalkot), G.N. Nayak and Superintendent of Police Ramesh Harihar and other officials, who have been camping in most affected Jamkhandi taluk, are supervising relief operations.
