MYSORE: Women should be given more representation in the political sphere to prevent corruption scandals, BJP Mahila Morcha vice-president C. Kamalamma has said. She was speaking during the inauguration of the four-day orientation and training programme for women councillors in urban local governments, organised here at the Organisation for Development of People (ODP) by the Urban Research Centre, Bangalore, in association with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, New Delhi. Seeking more reservation for women in the political sphere, she said, "More number of women means less corruption. Women can also get development works implemented on their own." Former Deputy Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation, Judith Mascarenus, said the then Rural Development Minister, late Abdul Nazeer Sab introduced reservation for women at a time when women were struggling for a break in politics. She said, "Even I am one of the beneficiaries of the 25 per cent reservation given to women in 1985 by late Abdul Nazeer Sab." Women councillors from Mangalore, Mysore, Udupi, Chamarajanagar, Basavakalyan, Ankola, Hubli-Dharwad and Kodagu are participating in the four-day training programme. During the programme, resource persons would deal with several issues such as utilisation of consumer fora, inviting public participation and decision-making. Problems faced by women councillors and possible solution to them and methods involved in passing resolutions would be taught to the councillors. Around 60 councillors from across the State would take part in the programme.
