Second phase of panchayat polls today

Police make arrangements for smooth conduct of elections

Srikakulam: The second phase of elections in Tekkali division of the district will be held on Wednesday. Voters will elect 268 village sarpanches.

According to District Panchayat Officer K. Gouripathi, there are 362 panchayats in Tekkali division and in 91 gram panchayats the choice is unanimous. No nomination has been received from three panchayats. The number of contestants is 647.

Similarly, 1,489 ward members will be elected.

In a press release on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police Manish Kumar Sinha said arrangements were made for peaceful election.

Elected unopposed

VIZIANAGARAM: The second and last phase of elections to 410 panchayats and 3,394 wards in Vizianagaram division will be held on Wednesday.

Over 900 candidates for sarpanch posts and 7,040 candidates for ward members are in fray. District Panchayat Officer A. Nagaraju said on Tuesday that 4,026 polling stations were arranged and 10,000 polling personnel deployed. The division has 513 gram panchayats and 4912 wards of which sarpanches for 103 gram panchayats and members for 1,515 wards were declared elected unopposed after the withdrawal of nominations.

Superintendent of Police Vikram Singh Mann said in a release that 1,482 police personnel besides 164 mobile parties and 33 striking forces were drafted for the poll duty. He said that 98 sensitive, 40 hyper-sensitive, three inaccessible and 141 troublesome villages were identified.

Kakinada : As part of the second phase of panchayat elections, arrangements were made for peaceful polling in Rajahmundry and Kakinada divisions. East Godavari Collector M Subrahmanyam said on Tuesday that in 380 village panchayats in both the divisions, 23 panchayats were unanimous and of 4366 wards 1060 emerged unanimous. Elections will be held for the remaining 357 panchayats and 3306 wards. He said 11,91,602 voters would be exercising their franchise in both divisions.

Personnel deployed

In Rajahmundry 617 candidates are in the fray for Sarpanch posts and 4359 for the ward members posts. He said 2390 polling stations were arranged in the division deploying 220 state two returning officers (RO), 2510 presiding officers and equal number of assistant presiding officers besides 3964 polling personnel.

Also 42 zonal officers and 106 route officers are being deployed. In Kakinada, 437 candidates are in the field for Sarpanch posts while 3094 for ward members. VISAKHAPATNAM: For the gram panchayat elections in the district, the State Election Commission has appointed IAS officer A. Koteswara Rao and IFS officer P.J. Vijayakar as general and expenditure observers respectively.

Polls observers

An official release said on Tuesday that the two officials toured Narsipatnam division. Election would be held in the division on Wednesday.
