Pilgrim killed in road accident

TIRUMALA: A 72-year-old pilgrim, Vasantha, was killed and three others grievously injured in a road accident on Papanasanam ghat 5 km from the Tirumala temple. The accident reportedly occurred when a private jeep carrying the pilgrims to Tirumala after a visit to the Papanasanam waterfalls rammed into a milestone. - Special Correspondent

KCR meets Naidu

HYDERABAD: Telangana Rashtra Samithi president and Union Labour Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao met Telugu Desam Party president N. Pension adalat

HYDERABAD: South Central Railway will conduct its 21st pension adalat at Secunderabad, Vijayawada, Guntakal, Guntur and Nanded on December 15. The last date for receipt of grievances is October 31. Grievances unconnected with settlement dues will not be taken up now if they have been represented in earlier adalats. - Staff Reporter

Naxal surrenders

Sangareddy: Mudike Mallesham (25) alias Madhu, CPI (Maoist) Giraipalli action team commander who was allegedly involved in several cases of murder and land mine blasts in Medak district surrendered before Superintendent of Police P.V. Sunil Kumar here on Tuesday. Mallesham joined the naxal movement in 2002. Speaking to reporters Mr. Sunil Kumar described the surrender as a big blow to the already weakened Maoist movement in the district. - Staff Reporter

Hosteller dies of fever

VIZIANAGARAM: Jami Linga Raju (12), a student of Social Welfare Hostel here died of viral fever on Tuesday. The boy was undergoing treatment as an outpatient at the district headquarters hospital. Ex gratia of Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 2,000 towards funeral expenses have been announced. Activists of Dalit Bahujan Shramik Union and Dalit Samkshema Sangham staged dharna at the hospital. - Correspondent

Telugu varsity exams

HYDERABAD: Telugu University will conduct first year annual exams for MA Telugu and Jyothisham courses from September 12 and for Sanskrit courses from September 18. Hall tickets have already been despatched to students, a university press release said on Tuesday. - Special Correspondent

TRS rasta roko against killing of advocate

KHAMMAM : TRS workers staged a rasta roko in Bayyaram protesting against the killing of party leader and advocate, Rupureddy Ravinder Reddy by naxalites of the CPI (ML New Democracy). Party workers chanted slogans pledging support to the bereaved family.

The body of the leader was taken to Irusulapuram village for the funeral. TRS leaders Talluri Venkateswar Rao, Gopagani Shankar Rao and Dr. Vijay Kumar attended. — Staff Reporter

Protest against GO 5

ONGOLE: Activists of the Centre for Indian Trade Unions staged a dharna near Prakasam Bhavan here on Tuesday demanding the immediate withdrawal of GO No. 5.

Several employees participated in the agitation and expressed concern over survival of public sector units. They raised slogans asking the Government to withdraw the controversial order. - Special Correspondent

Compensation for Gulf war victims

Kakinada: Compensation will be arranged for those who returned from the Gulf after being affected by the 1990 war there, according to Collector M. Subrahmanyam. Their claims have been settled, but payment delayed for want of information. Since the Joint Secretary,

Clause withdrawal demanded

VIZIANAGARAM : Journalists affiliated to APUWJ staged dharna at the district headquarters hospital demanding that the Government withdraw clause (VIII) in the GO No.422 which prohibits journalists from entering labour rooms, post-operative wards, ICUs etc., in Government hospitals. The APUWJ state secretary, D. Atchuta Rao threatened to intensify the stir if the clause was not withdrawn. A memorandum was submitted to the hospital co-ordinator, B.K. Naik.

Brothers suffer electrical shock

KADAPA: Two brothers suffered electrical shock in Poolukunta village in Galiveedu mandal on Tuesday.

Pitla Gangaiah and his brother Pitla Viswanath were going to their fields when they accidentally touched an electrical fencing put up around an adjoining field, police said.

They were rushed to the Government hospital at Rayachoti. Gangaiah is in a critical condition, police said. — Staff Reporter

KADAPA: CPI(M) district secretary B. Narayana on Tuesday condoled the death of K. Krishnamurthy, a senior leader of Telangana Armed Struggle, farm labour movement and the party. Arrested on assault charge

VIZIANAGARAM : V.T. Sudarshan Thatraj alias Babli was arrested along with five others on Tuesday at Parvathipuram on the charge of assaulting D. Jagadeeswara Rao, son of the former sarpanch of Addapusila gram panchayat in Parvathipuram mandal. - Correspondent
