All-out efforts for Legislative Council

Government to send delegation to CEC for ensuring early issue of poll notification

HYDERABAD: Intensifying its efforts for revival of the State Legislative Council, the State Government has reportedly decided to send a delegation to Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswamy to ensure that the notification for the election is issued at the earliest.

It has reportedly decided to depute a delegation after conclusion of the forthcoming Assembly session to urge the EC to issue the notification before October-end. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting convened by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy with his Cabinet colleagues K. Rosaiah, Konathala Ramakrishna and Koneru Ranga Rao, his political advisor K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao and senior officials on Tuesday.

Though the Government was initially contemplating partial constitution of the 90-member council, it had decided to go for full-scale constitution following the EC's suggestion.

It was felt that the election process should be completed by November and the first meeting of the Council held by year-end. This would ensure that election for one-third of the members, who would relinquish their office after completing the first two-year term, could be held when the Congress was still in power, sources said.
