Varied demands to the fore

State's position before new tribunal

HYDERABAD: Political parties came out with different demands at the all-party meeting convened by the Government here on Tuesday to evolve a strategy for arguing the State's case effectively before the new Krishna Water Tribunal.

The TDP delegation led by Kadiam Srihari argued that the tribunal should make a fresh assessment of water availability at 75 per cent dependability and allocate water accordingly. They said the inflows to the State had dwindled after the Alamatti dam was built. The CPI (M) team led by Y. Venkateswara Rao contended that there was no clarity in the re-allocations made by the State Government to benefit new projects and sought a white paper with full details.

CPI suggestion

CPI State secretary K. Narayana advised the Government to claim right over the surplus waters by citing deficit years when the river received poor inflows. The Telangana Rasthra Samithi and CPI- ML (New Democracy) joined hands to demand constitution of a Krishna Water Authority to see water was distributed to the riparian States "as per their allocations." S. V. Seshagiri Rao, BJP, expressed fears about the future of the existing and ongoing projects and pleaded for distribution of water among the States on pro-rata basis.
