  • Keys of complaint boxes will be with Legal Services Authority chairmen

KADAPA: Legal aid cells and grievance boxes would be put up in all prisons in the State, District and Sessions Judge M. Vijayalakshmi said on Tuesday.

State Legal Services Authority had directed putting up of grievance boxes in the Central prison, district and sub-jails in the district, she said at a press conference here.

Prisoners could drop complaints in boxes on human rights violations and instances of harassment, she said.

District and mandal-level Legal Services Authority Chairmen would have keys of the boxes, she said.

    Para-legal volunteers

Ten educated prisoners would be chosen as para-legal volunteers in each jail and trained on rights of prisoners, their duties, arrest, bail, FIR, lok adalats, free legal services, jail adalats and other related laws, Ms. Vijayalakshmi stated.

They trainees could later enlighten prisoners on legal aspects. She asked jail officials to assist prisoners in writing petitions.

Women prisoners and those pregnant should be made aware of issues like family planning and the Government's child welfare schemes, the DJ said.

Legal aid cells would be set up in all jails within August 15 under chairmanship of district and mandal legal services authority chairmen.

State Legal Services Authority had directed district judges to inspect jails and submit reports on prevailing conditions, Ms. Vijayalakshmi said.

Judges Surendra Babu Reddy, M. Pankajam, T. Easwara Rao, Vijaymohan, Rajesh Babu, Radhamma and Peeraiah also took part.
