CHANDIGARH: Haryana has taken the lead in installation of 74 solar light emitting diodes (LED) street lighting systems in select villages of Rohtak, Jhajjar, Rewari and Panchkula districts at a cost of over Rs.16 lakhs, Sumita Misra, Director, Renewable Energy Department, said here on Tuesday. She disclosed that solar photovoltiac (SPV) Technology had emerged as a viable power source for meeting the lighting energy needs as it enabled direct conversion of sunlight into electricity without pollution.
Device
And one of latest technologies in the lighting sector was LED which was a solid state device and emitted light when a current was passed through it. LED consumes a very low current even in comparison to the compact fluorescent lamp and its life is one lakh hours, almost equal to 23 years considering 12 hours daily use. Haryana had blended these two technologies, Ms. Misra claimed.
Maintenance
She added that the cost of solar LED street light was Rs.22,000 with a four-year comprehensive maintenance contract. Haryana was 100 per cent electrified in 1970 but with industrialisation and boom in the agriculture sector, the demand for electricity had increased manifold due to which the gap between demand and supply was increasing. The extensive use of this new technique would help in minimising the gap in demand and supply of power, she claimed.
