LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker has fixed August 7 for final hearing of the disqualification petition against five Samajwadi Party (SP) MLAs who voted in favour of BSP candidates in the recent Rajya Sabha elections. Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey deferred the matter after two of the MLAs Kamlesh Pathak and Ratan Lal Ahirwar appeared before him on Monday and sought time to file their replies. Mr. Pandey directed them to respond by August 4.
Objections
Earlier, the MLAs had filed preliminary objections on the petition moved by the SP State general secretary and PWD minister Shivpal Singh Yadav. The counsel for the legislators submitted that the petition was not maintainable and liable to be dismissed. Five SP MLAs Kalyan Singh Dohare, Omvati, Kamalesh Pathak, Sunder Lal and Ratan Lal Ahirwar had voted for BSP candidates in the Rajya Sabha polls. Later, Mr. Yadav moved a petition before the Speaker seeking disqualification of the five MLAs under the anti-defection Act.- PTI
