Staff Reporter
GUNTUR : The Guntur Municipal Corporation, A.P. Pollution Control Board and National Green Corps on Tuesday decided to increase the number of awareness camps on banning the use of plastic carry bags thinner than 20 microns. Guntur Municipal Commissioner D. Rama Rao promised to increase the vigilance on use of carry bags by vendors and impose penalties on those selling bags banned by the A.P. High Court. The APPCB in association with Regional Joint Director Municipal administration will extend the awareness programmes to all 11 municipal towns, said Environmental Engineer Ravindra Babu. Sub-Committees had been formed in all municipalities to monitor the implementation of the ban. The GMC had conducted nine awareness programmes so far in the city, said Mr. Rao. The APPCB and GMC had conducted raids on several business establishments in the city and would continue such raids in future also.
Obtain permission
The APPCB has meanwhile, served notices to 300 hospitals and nursing homes in Guntur district to obtain permission for safe disposal of bio-medical waste. A newspaper notice was given on July 20, but not many hospitals had come forward to obtain the permission.
