Explosives haul case may go to SIT

V.S. Palaniappan

COIMBATORE: The case relating to the arrest of five persons carrying explosives and documents on July 21 at three different places here is likely to be transferred to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the State Crime Branch CID (CB-CID).

The police, after seizing 400 gm of potassium chlorate mixture and components for making improvised explosive devices (IEDs), had said that the group planned to trigger low intensity explosions at a number of places targeting Hindu leaders.Soon after their arrest, the Madurai-based Vaigai Advocates Group, the Tamilnadu Muslim Munnetra Kazahagam and the Jama-ath had charged the police with fabricating a case with the help of an informant. They demanded an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation. They had accused also an officer of trying to be vindictive. The officer, who led the intelligence wing in the operations, was transferred out of Coimbatore on Monday night. Following reports about affiliation of the accused to a forum of a minority outfit, president of the Manitha Neethi Pasarai, M. Ghulam Mohammed, had clarified that it had no links with them.

Police sources said prima facie they were convinced of the unlawful activities and intentions of the accused, which stood vindicated by the material seized.
