CHENNAI: The Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar Memorial Trust will present the Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar Birthday Commemoration Award of Rs.1 lakh to Tamil scholar Sirpi Balasubramaniam.
K. Anbazhagan, Minister of Finance, will present the award to the scholar at Rani Seethai Hall on August 5 on the occasion of the 102nd birthday celebration of Dr. Rajah Sir M.A. Muthiah Chettiar of Chettinad. The 19th recipient of the award, which is being presented by the Trust since 1988, was chosen by a panel of three members comprising retired judges P.R. Gokulakrishnan, S. Rathnavel Pandian and Kundrakkudi Ponnambala Adigalar, said Ar. Ramasamy, secretary of the trust, on Monday. K. Chidambaram, treasurer of the trust, said four awards worth Rs.1 lakh each were given each year to a Tamil scholar, to an institute that has worked for the physically handicapped, for the organisation that has worked most for the upliftment of women, and to a Tamil music artist. This year's award winner, Sirpi Balasubramaniam, was born in Athupollachi in Coimbatore. He worked as a lecturer in N.G.M. College, Pollachi. He served as the head of the department of Tamil in Bharathiar University. He is the recipient of two Sahitya Akademi Awards, one for his translations and the other for his creative work.
