MANGALORE: K. M. Kaveriappa, Vice-Chancellor, Mangalore University has agreed "in principle'' to pay remuneration to teachers for all types of examination work including central valuation, according to Joselyn Lobo, president, Association of Mangalore University College Teachers (AMUCT), and Ummappa Poojary, general secretary.
Discussion of issues
The newly elected office-bearers of AMUCT met the Vice-Chancellor recently and discussed issues pertaining to higher education in general and problems of teachers in particular, they said in a release on Tuesday. They said that universities in other states provided remuneration to examination and related works to teachers. During the discussion the Vice-Chancellor has agreed to restore remuneration system for all examination-related work. Dr. Kaveriappa had agreed to direct college managements to give minimum pay, dearness allowance and other benefits to teachers in private unaided colleges. He had also agreed to look into their service conditions, the release added. The AMUCT office-bearers updated the Vice-Chancellor on the need to computerise the tabulation work with the introduction of credit-based semester scheme for degree courses from this academic year.
Research centres
The Vice-Chancellor had said that the university would encourage teachers to start research centres in their respective departments and create an environment conducive for research. Only then it can think of recognising eligible teachers in undergraduate colleges as Ph.D guides.
