We will not allow any compromise on foreign policy: Karat

Wants UPA Government to implement pro-people measures

SALEM: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) will not allow the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government to go against the people and compromise on the foreign policy, said Prakash Karat, party's all-India general secretary.

Addressing a public meeting here on Tuesday, he said, "We want the UPA government to implement all pro-people measures, adopt an independent foreign policy and fulfil the commitments it made in its Common Minimum Programme (CMP)."

Mr. Karat said in the last two years, most of the pro-people measures in the CMP had not been implemented. Reservation for women was also not taken up. The party had given enough time to the UPA. It had sent a written note to the Government. "We are waiting for government's reply." .

Demanding the Centre to abide by the CMP, he said, "Our party will support the Government only when it takes pro-people measures and adopts an independent foreign policy."

He said the government had again failed in its effort to sell the shares of profit making PSUs, which were the nation's assets, following stiff resistance from the Left and employees.

Mr. Karat asked the Government to introduce capital gains tax, which was abolished two years ago. "Tax the money gained in the capital market. Don't sell the shares of PSUs."

Mr. Karat welcomed the Tamil Nadu Government's decision to provide two acres to the landless.

He said the food security of the nation was in threat. The Centre was reducing procurement of wheat and rice every year.
