Clash after MTC employee teases trans-sexual persons

Staff Reporter

Police say they will take action against those responsible

CHENNAI: Some trans-sexual persons clashed with a group of people, after a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) employee allegedly harassed them at Tiruvanmiyur on Tuesday.

The police said that when the employee teased the transsexuals, they objected to it and wanted to take up the issue with the police. But the employee continued to harass them, and a wordy duel followed, which soon degenerated into physical assault. Both sides exchanged blows. The police have referred the injured to hospital.

Joint Commissioner of Police (South) G. Dorairaj said: "We will deal with the case as per the law and take stern action against eve-teasers."

The Tiruvanmiyur police claimed both sides agreed to settle the case amicably

This is not for the first time that the transsexuals have been abused in public. A social activist at Tiruvanmiyur expressed concern at the manner in which the MTC employee "insulted" the transsexuals.

The police `should have booked a case against the employee and taken stern action,' the activist said.
