CHENNAI: The 1,000 students of the Corporation and government schools watching the movie were totally engrossed on Tuesday. They were viewing Santhosh Sivan's Malli, and that too during school hours.

The venue was the Kalaivanar Arangam, and the treat courtesy the State Information Ministry.

The children's show was organised by the Ministry, with UNICEF support, at the Children's Film Festival here. Nearly 21,000 children from Corporation and government schools will watch films screened at the festival over the next seven days. The films will be screened thrice every day, with 1,000 children watching each show.

Inaugurating the festival, Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin said though several films were being shown on the small screen, watching a film in a theatre was a different experience. "Student days are very special in one's life. Make the best use of it," he told students.

Minister for Information and Publicity Parithi Ilamvazhuthi said such festivals helped to create awareness among students.

`Vetri Pathai', `Adisaya Kottu', `Dubhashi', `Thannambikkai', `Balya Medhai' and `Halo' are other films that will be screened at the festival. K.P. Ramakrishnan, distribution officer, Children's Film Development Corporation, said the films were chosen from the collection available in the Corporation's library.

Thomas George of the UNICEF, Information and Publicity Secretary V. Irai Anbu and Chief Education Officer D. Rajendran were present.
