KOCHI: A majority of schools in the district have expressed willingness to implement the scheme for reducing the `book load' of school children under the directive of the State Human Rights Commission. A survey conducted by the District Education Officer, Ernakulam, has revealed that most of the schools have expressed special interest in implementing the scheme. The survey was conducted at 301 schools including lower primary and upper primary schools, led by the DEO and with the cooperation of rights activist Mukesh Jain. The scheme of having only 100-page notebooks for students from class I, to class VII had already been implemented at 204 lower primary and upper primary schools in the Mattancherry, Ernakulam, Thripunithura and Vypeen sub-districts under the Ernakulam Education District. The survey revealed that the students were happy at the weight of the schoolbags getting reduced by one-third. The heads of schools opined that if the Government itself took the initiative to divide the textbooks by three according to the three terms from the next academic year, it would help to implement the scheme a lot better. This year, books had been divided into three according to the three terms with the help of teachers, parents-teachers associations and students, in more than half the schools. Some teachers have expressed concern over the implementation of filing scheme in high schools, as they had not understood the scheme in a proper manner. However, teachers, parents and students at the schools where the scheme was implemented had given a very positive feedback about the scheme.
