KOCHI: The Association of Kerala Self-Financing Medical Colleges has termed the ongoing talks to resolve the impasse over the admission of students to professional courses a "farce". Chairman of the association George Paul said here on Tuesday that the Government was going ahead with its case in the Supreme Court while saying that it was ready to hold talks with the management. Mr. Paul said that the Government had not invited the representatives of the medical college managements to resolve the deadlock.
Social equality
He said that the medical college managements were ready to ensure social equality in professional courses by providing freeship in 25 per cent of the total seats. "The Government can select students from the economically backward sections for admission to these seats." Mr. Paul said that the managements were ready to relax the 25 per cent freeship category a "little further" provided the Government agreed to enhance the fees for the remaining seats accordingly. The managements were ready to hold talks with the Government for finding a solution to the admission problem, he added. Meanwhile, seven colleges affiliated to the association started first year classes for medical courses on Monday. About 325 students who have secured seats under the management quota attended the classes held in these colleges. Mr. Paul said that the managements began classes based on the directives given by the Medical Council of India and the Supreme Court that the academic process should commence on August 1.
