Kochi: Despite several constraints being faced by the High Court, the pendency of cases was brought down to 1,26,051 by the end of June 2006. According to the High Court sources, pendency at the beginning of the year was 1,33,376. It was for the first time in the history of the court in the last 15 years that such a reduction had been achieved. This could be achieved mainly because of various measures taken by Chief Justice V.K. Bali in the matter of constitution of appropriate benches to deal with specified categories of cases with a view to get maximum output. Introduction of Single Bench sittings, once in a week by all the High Court judges, including the Chief justice had yielded significant result in the disposal of not only old cases, but also in the disposal of cases in which senior citizen were involved, cases relating to family disputes and atrocities against women and children. It had been pointed out that 41 cases were disposed of by the Full Bench from January 1, 2006, to June 30, 2006. As many as 42,778 cases were disposed of during this period.
