ON A MISSION: A file picture of `Peace Boat'.
KOCHI: The Peace Boat will arrive here on Sunday on its annual trip across the globe to spread the message of cooperation and peaceful co-existence. About 800 peace activists are on board the vessel on its 54th global voyage. The Peace Boat is an international non-governmental, non-profit organisation based in Japan. It strives to promote peace, human rights, equal and sustainable development and respect for environment. Creation of awareness and action based on positive social and political change is the aim of the organisation, which puts together annual trips and activities around the globe as the Peace Boat calls at on one port after another.
Activities
``We pursue this [objective] through the organisation of global educational programmes, responsible travel, cooperative projects and advocacy activities. These activities are carried out on a partnership basis with other civil society organisations and communities in Japan, northeast Asia, and around the world,'' according to information posted at the Peace Boat website www.peaceboat.org Once the Peace Boat arrives at a port, its participants and local people come together to share common activities with no language and cultural barriers dancing, playing or learning each other's handicraft skills, helping people participating in these activities to identify themselves with a common cause, building friendship and links across nations and cultures. This round of the annual trip began from Yokohama on July 21 and will end at Kobe on October 30. In between, the Peace Boat will call at ports in Vietnam, Singapore, India, Kenya, Eritrea, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Croatia, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Jamaica, Columbia, Guatemala, Mexico and the United States. The Peace Boat will be in Kochi for two days.
