Thiruvananthapuram: A cystic tumour, weighing 14 kg, was surgically removed from the abdomen of a woman at Medical College Hospital on Tuesday. Aboosa Beevi, 35, of Nilamel, had been to a hospital in Nilamel, complaining of unusually bloated stomach and abdominal pain. An ultrasound scan revealed the presence of a large tumour in her abdomen and she was referred to the MCH. A CT scan indicated that it could be an ovarian tumour. However, the cystic tumour was found in the `retroperitoneum' (space between the peritoneum and posterior abdominal wall), doctors said. While huge cancerous tumours have been removed from patients before, a cystic tumour this size is unusual, they added. The surgery was done by a team of doctors of S6 unit of the General Surgery department, led by unit chief Mohandas. The woman had been employed in the Gulf for long years. Though she did have abdominal pain, she never went in for detailed medical examination, the doctors said. A biopsy of the tumour is being done.
